Preliminary hearing in suit against former minister

Story PictureAnd while Cenaida prepares to sue, the preliminary hearing in the civil suit against former Minister of Health and Caribbean Shores Area Representative, Jose Coye, began today before Chief Justice, Abdulai Conteh. The matter has to do with land transactions which involved Coye as former area representative in the Caribbean Shores Division. A company named CHEOP Enterprises linked to Coye had developed lots and sold fifty seven lots in a subdivision. When the Barrow administration took over, the land title holders were served with letters of caution. Lands Commissioner, Manuel Rodriguez, had later instructed the Lands Registrar to cancel the letters of caution but, in January of this year, the Government filed a civil suit against Coye. Lois Young represented the Government in Court today. After about an hour later, the Chief Justice adjourned the hearing and asked Young to convince him why he should hear the case since the action she is trying to bring, malfeasance, applies to a public officer who has acted improperly. But Coye is no longer a public officer and so Young has until Friday to decide whether she will proceed with the case in the same light. Former Minister of Lands under the P.U.P. government, Florencio Marin is also being sued. He is represented by Francis Fonseca and Coye’s lawyer is Elson Kaseke.
