Belizean Professor, Doctor Luz Longsworth, Assumes Principalship of UWI Open Campus

Since the beginning of May, there have been two major changes in the administration of the University of the West Indies.  Senior management changes, including the promotion of Professor V. Eudine Barriteau to Principal Designate of UWI Cave Hill.  Meanwhile, Doctor Luz Longsworth, current Director of the UWI Mona’s Western Jamaica Campus has been selected as Acting Principal of the Open Campus for a one-year period.  This morning, a region-wide media teleconference was held and reporters across the Caribbean were given an opportunity to ask questions about UWI’s Open Campus program.

Dr. Joel Warrican, Director Academic Programming and Delivery Division

“Yes we are online, onsite and on demand and we are taking the university to you. So let me introduce you to some of the exciting programs that we have online. We have wonderful programs that the whole region would be interested in and beyond. It is important for me to say something about the organizational structure of our programming. We have a laddering system which allows our students to do their degrees somewhat in tranches. So we start with a pre-university certificate and that can help students to get into the university that is to matriculate into the university. And then we have the undergraduate certificates, then undergraduate diplomas, then bachelor’s degrees. From there, you move to the post graduate diplomas, the master’s degrees and then the doctorate degrees. We have many programs in education and one of them I’d like to highlight is the BA in early childhood development and family studies. For too long, Caribbean people have been working in the early childhood sector without proper qualifications. So that program is a very exciting one for the region. We have and many more.”
