The Best of 2 of the Premier League of Belize

The Premier League of Belize is now in finals battling the best of a two game series. On Thursday night in Belmopan, the Belmopan Bandits and Verdes FC played a nail biting game that had fans on the edge until the last second of play. The Defending champs, Bandits wants to retain its title to proceed to the CONCACAF Games. News Five Isani Cayetano reports.

A single goal scored by Edmund Pandy Junior in the eighty-sixth minute of play would ensure the Belmopan Bandits a marginal victory over Verdes FC in the first of a two-game series during the finals of the Premier League of Belize.  The win, a one-nil clincher, sees the house that John Saldivar built, besting its rival to gain an advantage going into the second round.

“We just had to come out as true champions and do what we had to do.  We cyant give up although we gaan down two players we haffi dig deep because wah true champion da bout heart.  Dat da all weh I have fi seh mein.  I thank God fi my team, we noh give up, we noh give in.”

Nonetheless, it is a significant W for the Bandits, who ended up having to play the remainder of the game short of two players who were ejected in the first half after being ticketed.

“We had to play the game smart after we went down two players because it was obvious Verdes had, they are a good ball possession team so we had to play a little defensive.  We had to maintain a particular shape to make it difficult for them to penetrate and hopefully we could get a counterattack on them and score a goal, you know.”

And that’s precisely what Pandy’s son did, capitalizing on a short leftfield pass from number sixteen, Jordy Polanco.  Despite a sliding effort to stop the ball in its path, Verdes’ goalkeeper Benito Moreira came up short, as the left footer easily found the back of the goalpost.

“We just dig deep and we gaan fi it.  We just haffi give all ah dat to the Most High mein.”

“How do you see the second final now, going into the second final even though you’ll be missing the striker you lost and Ian [Gaynair], I know he’s a key man on the defense?”

Edmund Pandy Jr.

“Well I mean I cyant seh nothing bout dat because football noh talk.  Yo haffi go out deh and play di game mein.”

Game Two of the closing season tournament will be played at the Norman Broaster Stadium on May seventeenth at four o’clock, when Verdes will once again do battle with the Bandits. Reporting for News Five, I am Isani Cayetano.
