Attorney claims 3rd party was leased disputed land…

Story PictureA lot has been said about a plot of land behind Saint John’s Vianney School in Belize City and now there is a new twist. Attorney Dolores Balderamos Garcia contacted News Five with information indicating that the land was leased to a Jamaica based charitable organization, Ministries of the Poor. During her tenure as Chair of the National AIDS Commission, Balderamos Garcia says she lobbied with government for approval of the lease because Ministries of the Poor wanted to build a youth hostel and a hospice for the elderly on the land. While it is not clear how knowledge of this third supposed owner will affect who ultimately takes ownership of the plot of land, Balderamos Garcia says there is need for an investigation.

Dolores Balderamos-Garcia, Attorney
“In October of 2003, government granted a lease to one point six-eight acres of land right in that very area to the Missionaries of the Poor. That I can say with certainty. There seems to be other information surfacing about Hand in Hand Ministries and about the Catholic Church owning all of the land. The Catholic Church is saying that they owned the entire five acres of land there. I can’t speculate as to whether there was an error in the grant of the lease in 2003 but I have a copy of the lease because when it came out I sent it to Bishop Martin and the Catholic Church at the time and that much I can say. I would very much like to see the good work of Hand in Hand Ministries to be able to be carried forward and I can certainly say for my part, that what I am hearing coming from government is not so and it needs to be fully and thoroughly investigated.”
