Mark Lizarraga Demands Details of Petrocaribe Spending

Mark Lizarraga

Just in the event that you’re one of the very few who hasn’t been following the Petrocaribe hue and cry, the relevance is this. The government has stated time and again that it is forced to borrow and spend before seeking approval in the House because the exact amount of money to be borrowed cannot be determined beforehand. That rationale has driven the controversial Petrocaribe Bill, where government has written unprecedented legislation legalizing its borrowing of monies without House approval, retroactive to 2012. Lizarraga says that all this is par for the course where G.O.B. is concerned, and as he has done before in the Senate, demanded that the details of the Petrocaribe spending be revealed.

Mark Lizarraga, Senator, Business Sector

“We are told, you know…that we have a very good government that knows how to take care of your money. But yet every report that you read…we read the Auditor-General’s Report, we read the European Commission’s PIFA Report, we read the report on cost-savings that the government requested – and in all of these reports we see poor record-keeping, poor storage keeping, poor management, poor supervision of systems, non-compliance of laws and regulations, irresponsibility in government spending, non-compliance for recommendations made by the Auditor-General…in addition to the non-existence of the PAC which is supposed to be the watchdog for government…for Parliament. And then we are told that we should confirm, validate that these borrowings are being used for the purposes stated and we are provided with the details. Well I showed you earlier the details we are provided with for eighty-six million dollars of your money…and it’s in one page, two pages, three pages, and this is eighty-six million dollars. How can you come to me and tell me this is details? Details mean minute…details means all the information, all the facts…these are not details. But yet you claim that the details are provided to Venezuela. So why can’t you provide those details to Parliament?”

News Five has confirmed that even as government makes its media rounds to push Petrocaribe, other parties, including the unions, are holding countrywide sessions to raise awareness where the Petrocaribe Bill is concerned.

The ones charged with the most responsibility of protecting the constitution are the very ones who thrash it the most. We call them lawyers. Oh, they are very good at lying with a straight face, rhetoric and all. Smh!
