…Renews Call for Transparency

Bobby Lopez

And although Petrocaribe dominated the conference which lasted almost two hours, there were other issues. V.I.P. front man Bobby Lopez reiterated the Party’s position on declaration of assets under the Prevention of Corruption Act. But this time he took it further, warning that there is a hefty fine for non-disclosure and when the V.I.P. does reach to the halls of power in Belmopan, they plan to collect.

Bobby Lopez, Public Relations Coordinator, VIP

“You are required by law to disclose your income, assets, liabilities in according with the Prevention of Corruption Act for five years – the year before, the three years you are in office, and they the year you leave if you leave. For those who were re-elected you’re also required to continue to disclose and March thirty-first was your deadline, since you were re-elected that ran straight through. You don’t even have the ninety days which newly elected have. But I want to share some numbers with you all because for the benefit…and I want to applaud those who have submitted and there are a few…but as a recent U.S. State Department report had said…since 1994 when this law was enacted less than ten percent have ever abided by it and disclosed. That is a shame. That is a downright shame. But I want to tell you when I did the numbers that its two hundred and seventeen thousand that anybody owes that was elected for the last municipal three years. That’s the fine you owe at a hundred dollars per day for every year you’re supposed to disclose, and it goes compounding you guys and the last time I checked with some legal person they said there’s no statute of limitation when you owe those monies to government. So one day the V.I.P. will collect. We’ll come knocking on your doors to collect. So please do the right thing.”
