‘Dalla’ Van Driver Charged for Unlawful Sexual Intercourse

Francis Avilez

A Belize City mechanic is spending his first night behind bars on remand after he was charged for unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor today. Twenty-nine-year-old Francis Avilez, a full-time mechanic and part time “dollar van” operator, is accused of twice having sex with a minor who was thirteen at the time.  Last week the minor, accompanied by her mother, told police that the first incident occurred in February, when she went with Avilez to his home located behind Belize Water Services. The second incident, she claims, took place in mid-March when she went with Avilez to the Gulf Motel, located on the Phillip Goldson Highway. Avilez was taken to court in handcuffs this morning. He appeared before Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith, and was formally arraigned on two counts of unlawful sexual intercourse. No plea was taken from the accused, who was unrepresented in court. He was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until July fifteenth. The prosecutor in the case has indicated that by the end of July a preliminary inquiry will be held to determine if there is enough evidence to go to trial at the Supreme Court. Avilez, meanwhile, does have the option of applying to the Supreme Court for bail.
