September Celebration Theme Competition Kicks Off

Shari Williams

And if you’d like to win a thousand dollars, you can also participate in the 2015 “September Celebrations Theme Competition.” All Belizeans, living at home and abroad, are invited to submit their most creative ideas for the theme for this year’s anniversary of the Battle of Saint George’s Caye and Independence. Williams says that the deadline is quickly approaching and the public has five weeks left to enter their submissions.

“Well every single year, people look forward to the theme competition that the national celebrations commission sends out and we’ve sent out the call. So feel free to start putting pen to paper and putting together your idea of what the theme should be to celebrate the two hundred and seventeenth anniversary of the Battle of St. George’s Caye and the thirty-fourth anniversary of our Independence. It could be anything that has to do with social cohesion, national development…we are leaving it very broad this year so that we don’t want to sway people into any direction. The theme has to be less than ten words—ten words or less—and multiple entries are encouraged. So you can send in two, three, four entries. You can email it again at or they can drop it off here at the Bliss, drop it off at the House of Culture or you can send it to any of the district town councils. So we are inviting people from the districts to be a part of the theme competition as well. We are looking at a theme that doesn’t infringed on anybody’s rights or discriminatory. So at the end of the day the commission has the last say on the theme. We’ve had instances in the past where someone sent in a theme that the commission really liked, but it had to be twerked here or there; a word replaced with something else. So we are looking for theme that speaks to national cohesion, that speaks to national development, social cohesion. It can be anything; ten words. The winner receives a cash prize of one thousand dollars. Again put your pen to paper and send in your submission.”

The deadline to submit your proposed theme is May twenty-ninth.
