What’s the P.M.’s Two Cents on the Ray Davis/N.T.U.C.B. Situation?

Dean Barrow

N.T.U.C.B. Second Vice-President, Audrey Matura-Shepherd has called for the head of Senator Ray Davis because he abstained when asked to vote on the controversial Petrocaribe Bill. Matura has gone so far as to say that she will lobby for him to be removed, though she feels that he should do the honourable thing and resign. That back and forth is playing out now, and promises to be long and drawn out. Today, the PM offered his two cents on the matter, stating that for the N.T.U.C.B., getting rid of Davis would be a very bad move.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“I think in all respects he is an outstanding fellow and I can’t quite understand why some people in the N.T.U.C.B., in particular the Vice-President, would be going after him in this fashion, especially because he seems to be able to show that he did not receive specific instructions. If you don’t instruct a man…in effect you are leaving it up to him to make his individual determination. How then are you going to fault him for the determination that he did make? It is my sense that Ray bore well in mind the fact that public officers and teachers have benefitted so handsomely from Petrocaribe. They have a seat on the National Bank through which they are benefitting. They have a seat on BIL so that the largest infrastructure projects they are able to provide oversight for. So that while the argument is that they are quarrelling with the legislation rather than the program, in a sense the lines are blurred, and so it doesn’t strike me at all surprising that left to his own devices Davis didn’t feel that this was something he should vote ‘No’ on. I’m a little disappointed that he didn’t vote yes. But as I said, that apart, he’s an outstanding fellow and I would hope for the sake of the N.T.U.C.B. that they don’t let go of a person who is a stellar performer.”
