Hundreds of thousands missing from Treasury Dept…

Story PictureLater in this newscast we will report on the missing monies at the offices of the Border Management Agency at the western entry point. But first there is yet another case of funds gone missing, and in this latest instance, the B.M.A. case pales in comparison. News Five can confirm that hundreds of thousands of dollars, some say as much as half a million, are missing from the Treasury Department in Belize City. Police have been called in to investigate and a number of persons were questioned today, some of them, very high ranking. The fraud has just been detected but was apparently being perpetuated for some time. And unlike the Belize City Council where there are investigations of under-depositing, in this case, it seems to be double depositing, and it involves pension funds.

According to information available, a female employee of the department was transferring pension payouts to two set of accounts. The way it worked is that the payments were made to hundreds of legitimate bank accounts of pensioners and then another deposit was made in their name, but using a different ID, to another commercial bank account. Questions were raised when the amount of deposits began to balloon and it was detected that last December in particular, the payments had gone up excessively. This scam, however, should not be the most difficult to crack as the government’s Smart Stream System, can smartly identify transfers made by any user. One person who police has detained is said to have a huge Atlantic Bank account and is linked to an employee of the Treasury Department.
