Labor Department Meets With Santander Employees, Is Salary Issue Resolved?

On Monday night, we told you about the employees who had gathered at the grounds of Santander because they had issues about salaries. Workers were complaining about payments they received on Friday, but according to Santander, it was really workers who were confused about the monies they received and that everything was resolved by the afternoon and operations resumed. This morning, we received a number of reports that workers were being dismissed as a result of yesterday’s actions and were being called in to a meeting to discuss issues about their employment. Today, we spoke, via phone, with Santander’s representative in Belize and she said that no one has been terminated and that the meeting with the Labour Department was being facilitated by Santander.

“With our staff and the labour department, we have done this with social security and we continue to do with the labour department. There has been nothing unusual going on the property. We were the ones who called them in to the meeting with the labour department. As I said, that is a part of their routine. They just let you know that from time to time they meet with workers. We have the labour department here just to talk about basic health and safety situations and informing them about the labour act and what that means to them etc. So, there is nothing go on, on the property, Andrea.”

“Ok. So, no one fired as far as you are aware?”

“As far as I am aware, no. As I said, the meeting with the labour department right now isn’t about anything that is happening today or whatever. And rightfully so, based on the report on the media last night, the labour department reserves the right to communicate with any of our employee as well, and it’s in line with that they have the meeting going on here today.”
