…Where Does Belize/Guatemala Dispute Stand?

Nestor Mendez

But with a Belizean representative holding the second to the highest seat in the O.A.S. hierarchy, will it help with the resolving the Belize-Guatemala dispute?

Nestor Mendez, Assistant Secretary General Elect, O.A.S.

“The O.A.S. has been involved as a key facilitator in trying to resolve the dispute between Belize and Guatemala for many years now. It has an office in the adjacency zone which has been very useful in determining when there are incursions into the country. There is a commitment from the O.A.S. that certainly it has a role to play in helping these two countries—our country and Guatemala—resolve this very important obstacle to improving the integration within Central America. From what I see, the commitment of the O.A.S. remains and it will remain to do everything in its part to help the two countries resolve its dispute. In terms of my personal view, I am hoping that the O.A.S. will be able to continue and perhaps see if there are ways to expand the contributions that are made to the process. The facilitation role by the O.A.S. at the moment, as has been the case for many years, is held by the office of the Secretary General. The new Secretary General will determine whether that will remain the case. I don’t know if I will be involved, if the Secretary General will ask me to be involved. If that is the case, I can assure you that I will treat the matter with the greatest seriousness and responsibility that such a sensitive matter certainly deserves.”

  1. CEO says:

This issue will never end because Guatemala does not want it to end they want Belize and anything short of that will not be accepted. Why the heck do we keep wasting time with these guys? You will work years to get some agreement signed and then they will violate the agreement the first chance they get.
