Matura-Shepherd on Davis – Round Two

Audrey Matura-Shepherd

As we told you, the Petrocaribe Bill was discussed by the N.T.U.C.B. after it was actually passed, and not before. So we wondered if perhaps the abstention by Senator Ray Davis could have been the result of his not being clear on the position of or mandate from the unions.

Audrey Matura-Shepherd, Second Vice-President, N.T.U.C.B.

“No. I say no, but that’s something he has to resolve in his mind. His answer to us was that he felt that if he said yes it would look as though he is going with those that said yes. And if he said no it would look like he’s going with those who said no, and he didn’t want to be pigeonholed. That was his exact word. He didn’t want to be pigeonholed. And I explained to him what problem I have with that. Because to me you’re not voting yes or no for the bill based on what others are saying…you’re going to put your arguments forward and on those standards that’s what you will vote on. If you feel that your personal values or position is in conflict with what the group requires, you need to step down. That is the honourable thing to do, but that’s my take. I know that’s a position I put on the table, and that’s a position I will push and canvass for. It needs to be addressed even if people don’t support my position. The thing is, the democracy within the union, once something is tabled it goes through the process, and I have faith that it will go through the process. And it’s not, like I said in a previous interview when we had a briefing – it’s nothing personal. It’s just that you have to know what you’re representing, who you’re representing…the ethos of the entity. And the ethos of the N.T.U.C.B. has always been and will always be transparency and accountability, no matter who is the leadership and no matter what attempts people may make to circumvent it, even if there’s internal wrangling, even if there are people who try and undermine…that’s just the nature of the entity. The entity itself is bigger than the personalities.”

Just for clarity, we note that since April first the N.T.U.C.B. has come out resoundingly against the Petrocaribe Bill. As to Davis…well Matura says the decision to remove him, or not, would come after a lengthy and drawn out union process, and not anytime soon.
