Man Killed…Wife Shot in the City

Mark Rhamdas

The Berkeley Street area in Belize City has quickly become a hotspot in the Old Capital. There have been several shootings and a murder in recent days. At about six o’clock on Wednesday night, there was another homicide. Twenty-five year old Mark Anthony Rhamdas was executed as he rode his motorcycle in an alley where Jamie Chavarria was murdered on March thirtieth. Rhamdas was transporting his four year old son and twenty-one year old common-law wife, Etheline Mejia, who he had just picked up from work. While the young boy was unscathed, Mejia was injured in the shooting. Duane Moody reports.

Just after six on Wednesday evening, shots rang out once again in the Berkeley Street area in downtown Belize City. Mark Rhamdas Junior was killed, while his common-law wife was shot and his son has been left traumatized.

Supt. Hilberto Romero, Head, CIB, Eastern Division

“Police visited the area of South Side Meats where a shooting had occurred. The victim was identified as Mark Rhamdas. He was taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. He was shot to the feet and to the chest area.”

Prior to his murder, Rhamdas Junior, his mother, two siblings and four children were socializing on the veranda to their home on an alley off Albert Street and adjacent to South Side Meat Shop. Moments later, Mark left with his four year old son on a motorcycle to pick up his common-law wife, Etheline Mejia from work. On their return, midway through the alley—his son in the front and the girlfriend on the back of the motorcycle—a gunman came from the opposite end of the alley and opened shots at them. In an effort to protect his family, Rhamdas Junior pushed his son down and stood upright on the motorbike. He was shot to the chest, but still managed to run through the alley and on to Albert Street where he collapsed near the Chinese Store.

Supt. Hilberto Romero

“At this time, we have one person in custody. We are reviewing footage from the area, we are recording statements and hopefully we can ascertain what actually transpired there. He was riding a motorcycle through an alley when he was shot.”

Mejia hovered over the child and was hit twice to the hip and the foot.

“The condition of the girl?”

Supt. Hilberto Romero

“She is in a stable condition. She is at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital receiving treatment.”

“Is the person that had been detained working along with the police?”

Supt. Hilberto Romero

“He will be interviewed and see what information he can provide.”

Ehud Haulze

But who would want the twenty-five year old dead? While police could not confirm a motive for the crime, it is known that the alley exits on Berkeley Street where just last week, Ladyville resident, Jaime Chavarria, was gunned down by at least one gunman. It is also known that in the wake of that murder, Rhamdas Junior was detained for questioning.

“Sir have you established a motive?”

Supt. Hilberto Romero

“We do not have a clear motive at this time. We know Mark Rhamdas had been charged before and investigated for some shootings and for firearm.”

“So you are more leaning to maybe gang rivalry?”

Supt. Hilberto Romero

“Like I said, I do not have an exact motive but he has in fact yes been investigated for such crimes in the past.”

Another Ladyville resident, twenty-seven Ehud Haulze, is a person of interest in the case. A surveillance camera captured the incident and has been handed over to police.  Duane Moody for News Five.
