NICH Announces Winners of Logo Competition

The Institute of Social and Cultural Research through NICH is in the process of gathering data on historical events. The Belize History Association was formed to engage persons from all walks of life from across the country to add to the collective data about the country. But the association needed a trademark, a logo that would epitomize its purpose.  So in January, it launched a Logo-Design Competition in order to attain a logo which would serve as a distinctive symbol for the organization. A total of fifty-three logos from across the country were submitted and today, there was not only one, but two winners announced at a brief ceremony at the House of Culture in Belize City.

Rolando Cocom

Rolando Cocom, Senior Research and Education Officer, ISCR

“The panel of judges was given a rubric which the media houses are receiving the application guidelines and the expectations for the logo in the DVD that is being offered to you. What happened is that the panel of judges then went over these characteristics in terms of is this logo representative of what we want to do. So in this case, they looked at the logo that Mister Cho had given and they saw the magnifying glass and okay that is something very representative so they voted for that one. In fact what happened was that when they saw Mister Gongora’s logo is that they also saw this open book, which was something very welcoming and something they felt was necessary for a logo for the BHA. We tallied up all the numbers from about eight judges and we decided that based on the numbers the preference was for Mister Joel Cho’s logo. But as is the case with any group, you will find that one or two person who say I really like this logo, but if it can be tweaked a bit, if it can be modified a bit. And then we said okay, look at the logo that received the second most votes and that was Mister Gongora’s logo and said this matches perfectly if we can put his logo within the internal space of the design by Mister Cho.”

Joel Cho

“I feel nervous and excited at the same time. First time I heard about the logo competition as in the newspaper and then I started working on it.”

“The outside of the logo is your design. Why those specific colors and presentation of the design?”

Rolando Cucum

“If I may, what happened is that also the color that he had on the logo design was tweaked a bit—perhaps that is why he is reluctant to speak on it. It was modified for the sake of ensuring that when we reprint the logo, it prints easily on all printers. For that reason, what happened is that ISCR; we had an internal designer adjust the colors. And as you can see what is typically the case with artists, they don’t tend to enjoy the public front as opposed to being behind a computer or behind a paint brush.”

Jeremy Gongora

Jeremy Gongora, 2nd Place Winner, BHA Logo Competition

“I feel honored to win second place for this logo competition—not because of the cash prize, but because of what this organization will represent to Belize. I feel very privilege to win second place and I also congratulate the first place winner for submitting a very original design.”
