Earlier in the newscast, we reported on two cases of arson in the village of Barranco in the south. Well, there is another incident in which a small house was also deliberately set on fire. In Belize City, a sole bread winner, her father and her four children are homeless tonight. Two minors are suspected of setting Lisa Tracy’s house on fire. Duane Moody reports.

Sometime after six-thirty on Monday morning, a blaze erupted at a wooden house on Hibiscus Street. The two bedroom structure was the property of twenty-nine year old Lisa Tracy, a single mother of four children—ages ten, nine, seven and six. Tracy had just left the house around six a.m. when she was notified of the fire.

I have four kids without a father and it is really rough for me as a single parent to try uplift myself and they bring me down like this.  When I get the information and I reach down this side yah, the house gone. The house up in flames and all I coudla mi do dah stand pan the side and watch the firemen di out my house.”

The National Fire Service was notified around seven-forty-eight in the morning, they were called out to the scene. Minutes later the fire was put out, but by then the house was completely gutted.

Benisford Matura, Operations Officer, Belize National Fire Service

“Both our fire trucks were dispatched to the location. On arrival there was a twelve by twelve wooden structure engulfed in flames. The fire service got into operation and extinguished the fire. At the time of the fire, no one was at home.”

The structure had no electricity and investigations would later reveal that the fire was reportedly set by two minors.

Benisford Matura

“Investigation revealed that just shortly before the fire, the sight of the fire, neighbors saw two minors entering the structure and ran away just minutes before. The investigation has shown that this was an incendiary fire where a fire was lit where it shouldn’t have been. The police have the minors for questioning. There was a sign that yes they did break into the home to start the fire because the fire was set on a mattress within one of the bedrooms.”

But for Tracy, the place known as home to her four children and her fifty-seven year old father is gone and they are left without a roof over their heads.

Lisa Tracy

“Right now my babies dehn split between their families and two deh dah my ma and right now I noh even wah go see my two daughters over that side deh because of how I feel. I noh want my daughters dehn watch pan me and see that I stressed out and I still have to tell them that the house gone, dehn noh have no clothes, dehn noh got nothing, yo know. so I woulda really want the public to assist me, but right now all I really need dah wah roof over my baby dehn head. As long as I have a roof over my baby dehn head, the rest of pieces can come in afterwards. The material things, it really hurts because yo work hard for yo things, but the most import thing is a roof over yo head.”

Two minors have since been detained. Duane Moody for News Five.
