Benisford Matura

There were two other fires in the Toledo District…one in at a school in Big Falls and the other in Blue Creek. In the wee hours of Monday, a fire would erupt in the principal’s office of the Roman Catholic School in Big Falls. Over ten thousand dollars in books and office equipment went up in flames. Hours later, around nine-thirty, firefighters would be called out to another fire, this time at a garage in Blue Creek Village. Operations Officer of the National Fire Service, Benisford Matura, says that in both cases, the cause of the fires has still not been determined.

“Presently, the investigation is still ongoing. Some investigations do take longer than others so it is still ongoing to discover what caused this fire. On Monday, sixth April, approximately nine-thirty a.m., another call came in to the Punta Gorda branch of the fire department of a structure on fire in Blue Creek Village. On arrival on the scene, a two-storey structure measuring approximately eighty by a hundred and fifty was already engulfed in flames and into the smothering phase. The NFS went on and finished extinguishing the fire. The owner of the building, the building was used as a garage or a workshop and the property of Caribbean Light through the Missionaries of U.S.A. The estimated damage is twenty thousand. The building was under the care of a sixty-two year old Daniel Stutsman.”

In the west and north, two houses were gutted by fire. On Saturday, police responded to a house fire at the junction of Church and Burns Streets in Benque Viejo Town. The house of seventy-three year old Arceliana Pacheco was gutted by fire reportedly started by a three-year-old was playing inside the kitchen. Investigations reveal that the minor set a vehicle tire on fire; it spread quickly gutting the kitchen area of the building. Meanwhile in Orange Walk on Sunday morning, there was also a fire at the house of seventy-seven year old Narciso Novelo in August Pine Ridge Village. Novelo reported that he was sleeping when he was awakened by family members trying to extinguish the blaze. Initial investigations reveal that fire started in the south end of the thatched roof. While Novelo was safely removed from the house, the place was completely destroyed.
