RTA Near Edgewater Leaves One Dead

Victor Underwood

Twenty-seven-year-old Victor Underwood perished in a fatal road traffic accident which occurred along the Phillip Goldson Highway at the start of the Easter weekend.  He would be the first of two victims to succumb to injuries received in separate incidents in less than twenty-four hours.  The mentally challenged wanderer was walking along the stretch of road a short distance away from Edgewater in Sand Hill Village when he was struck by a black Ford Ranger driven by forty-one-year-old Marlon Longsworth.  In a statement Longsworth subsequently provided to Ladyville police, he alleges that Underwood suddenly jumped in front of his vehicle on the highway.  While he swerved to avoid hitting Underwood head-on, the items Longsworth was transporting in the pan of the pickup reportedly battered the Biscayne resident.  He was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where he expired while undergoing treatment.  This morning, News Five spoke with Underwood’s sibling, as well as Inspector Frederick Gordon of Ladyville Police.  Their accounts vary considerably, except to say that Underwood was known for his erratic behavior while traversing the highway.

Andrew Underwood, Brother of Deceased

“On Thursday night, actually Friday morning when I get up I get some text stating dat mi bredda get knocked down and ih gaan with di ambulance.  But di text seh dat ih no dead noh, di ambulance tek ahn to di hospital.  Di following maanin we get wahn call from my sista dat mi bredda passeid away.  So about eight o’clock dat same morning di sergeant from Ladyville Police Station came to pick us up noh and take us to di scene.  Also we went to the Ladyville Police Station where we also met the driver, you know and he explained what happened with Victor, you know.  From what he was saying, he saw Victor, well ih neva know da Victor, but he saw someone flicking a lighter on the roadside and when he got closer, he slowed down and Victor suddenly made a jump in front of him.  He said he swerved from him and he had some sheet rack in the back of his vehicle and the sheet rack hit him in the midsection, like around this area, that caused him to flip and knock his forehead.  He said he did the right thing, he called the ambulance and he called the police.”

Inspector Frederick Gordon, Rural Executive Officer

“On the third of April, police received information of a traffic accident in Sand Hill Village where we visited the area where we observed that a male person was suffering from injuries where one Marlon Longsworth reported to the police that he was driving his pickup on the Phillip Goldson Highway heading towards Crooked Tree Village where a male person whilst passing, ran into the, or jumped into the side of the vehicle where he received head injuries.  As a result the ambulance was called.”

Andrew Underwood

“But the response was slow and when the ambulance came, because of Victor’s condition, they didn’t want to deal with him, you know.  Victor had to get on the stretcher himself and the driver also said that he didn’t want to go to the hospital because he said that if he goes to the hospital he would die there.”

“Mr. Longsworth, after the accident, he had stopped on the scene, he was there when the police arrived and he assisted the police there and he was brought to the station here where a statement was recorded from him and a note of intended prosecution was served on him the same night.  That’s the report given by the driver that the person had allegedly jumped to the side of the vehicle.  But, as I said, we are investigating the matter and we are looking into the matter.  The matter is under investigation right now by the police.”

Isani Cayetano

“Are there other witnesses, or any witness for that matter, who have come forward to give an account of what they may have seen at the scene of this accident?”

Frederick Gordon

“Well at the area where the accident occurred just past where they call the area used to be known as Edgewater in Sand Hill.  The area is very dark at night and the time when the incident occurred it was like after eleven p.m. that night.  So there was nobody walking on the street at that time on the highway, in the immediate vicinity of where the accident occurred.”
