Teenage Trio Charged for Burning Down Youth Hostel’s Female Dorm

Erlene Baizar

Three persons were arraigned today for a fire at the Belize Youth Hostel compound at Mile twenty-one on the George Price Highway. The fire on Tuesday gutted a section of the hostel and following the determination that it was arson, sparked an intensive investigation. Two minors, one twelve and one thirteen, along with eighteen-year-old Erlene Baizar, are believed to be responsible for the blaze which destroyed the female dormitory and all its contents, a total value of two hundred and eighty thousand dollars. This morning, the three accused appeared before Magistrate Ladonna John and were each charged with one count of arson and one count of damage to property. Based on objections from the prosecutors, Baizar, believed to be the ringleader of the trio, was denied bail and remanded to the Belize Central Prison until April seventh. At that time she is to undergo a psychiatric evaluation to determine her fitness for trial. The minors were offered bail of one thousand dollars each, but by news time only one of them had met bail. The other was taken back to the Princess Royal Youth Hostel since no family member appeared on her behalf.  Baizar, who is eighteen, has been living at the hostel since the age of nine.
