B.E.L. Wants to Slash Electricity Rates by Ten Percent

Will your light bill go down for the period June first 2015 to June thirtieth, 2016? According to a release late this afternoon, the Public Utilities Commission says that the government controlled Belize Electricity Limited has applied for a reduction of ten point four percent in the Mean Electricity Rate from forty one point twenty nine cents to thirty seven cents per kilowatt hour.  B.E.L. says the reduction is due to lower costs in acquiring power from Mexico’s Comision Federal de Electricidad, better known as C.F.E.  Mexico is moving to dispatch energy at a cheaper price by utilizing hydroelectricity and moving to the use of cheaper, cleaner fuels such as natural gas and other renewable energy sources, compared to heavy fuel oil and diesel.  B.E.L. says it is also proposing changes to the Tariff Basket that will further subsidize the Social Rate customers; pass on most of the cost savings to Residential and Industrial customers; provide additional cost savings for medium and large manufacturers that are not benefiting from the special Industrial Rates; and allow for additional streetlights to be installed mainly in crime hotspots countrywide.
