What You Need to Know to be Safe this Easter

Suzette Anderson

“Safety is like a lock, but you are the key,” says the Belize City Police Department as it prepares residents to protect their homes and businesses over the holidays. It’s a practice that home and business owners must consider to safeguard their assets. Other safety tips include securing windows and doors, installing electronic sensors and alarms and not leaving large sums of monies at home. But even in the event of not being able to invest in such security measures, the old-fashioned practice of telling a neighbor is very much still effective.

Supt. Suzette Anderson, O.C., Precinct 3, Belize City Police

“Safety must first come from the person himself or herself which means that in order for you to have that assurance that you practice safety in terms of your own homes; that you establish communication with your neighbors; that is the first step to it.  That you communicate so that they know that your place will be unattended so that they can keep an eye for you. At the same time, try to leave your phone, keep the volume down so that the burglars…you prevent them from hearing your phones ringing giving them the idea that no one is at home. You try to leave on lights in your home so as to have them believe that someone is at home. You try to leave behind a radio on or a stereo or TV on so that that will prevent any burglar from getting that attention towards your home.”
