But while there are several things that residents can do to ensure that their properties are safe while they are away, the police will also increase its patrols across the city to ensure that the city remains safe. Today, checkpoints were visibly placed across the north side portion of the city to deter crime. This, says Officer Commanding Precinct Three of Belize City, Superintendent Suzette Anderson, started earlier this week and will continue after the holidays and is part of the Easter Anti-Crime Operations for the Eastern Division.

Supt. Suzette Anderson, O.C., Precinct 3, Belize City Police

“Due to the fact that the Easter holidays is already approaching, we have been embarking on providing safety tips to residents, business places, in as for them to secure their places of business, their homes whenever they are away because we do know that the Easter Holiday normally sees a large percentage of people leaving the city to go to the cayes, to the islands, to different locations where there is sea, river and they leave their premises behind unattended. And we are a police department it is our responsibility to patrol in an effort to prevent burglaries from occurring in the respective homes that will be left unattended. Normally on any occasion, we would set up VCPs, vehicle check points. Vehicle check points are necessary in order to prevent or deter any crime from occurring because from time to time we have incidents of robberies, we have burglary incidents, we may have shooting incidents. Sometimes the police presence on those VCPs held to deter or prevent certain crimes from occurring. When it comes to the VCPs that we have in our area of responsibility, it is done around this time of the year as well as a form of increase and visibility of the police on the streets to provide that safety and security for the citizens that we are policing in the community. So since yesterday, we started the VCPs in regards to the Easter Holidays. As well the police department, eastern division, has an Easter anti-crime operations which requires all the respective precincts within eastern division to embark on that sort of anti-crime operation where you will see increase of police officers in the respective areas within the city, patrolling to minimize the incidents of robberies, the incidents of burglaries and whatever other major incidents that occur from time to time.”
