John Saldivar and Khalid Belisle Deliver Belmopan

John Saldivar

In the nation’s capital where the elections were fought hard for months leading into Wednesday, the U.D.P. won by an impressive margin. Newcomer, Khalid Belisle and his team would dominate keeping the town council under the red banner. Even as there was a commanding margin, the results are the most interesting because five candidates would run for the top seat at City Hall. Andrea Polanco reports.

John Saldivar, Area Rep, Belmopan

“We won a historic first box in the Belmopan East area, which covers Salva Pan, San Martin, Maya Mopan area of Belmopan. That I believe is a great achievement and to my mind signals the direction of the final count vote count will take.”

Andrea Polanco

“Minister, I know your people are waiting for you over there, but we need ask, if there is a win tonight for the U.D.P., how will you guys celebrate?”

John Saldivar

“Oh, we are really going to celebrate. You may notice at this time I am not yet totally excited. I promised the Prime Minister nine hundred and thirty-five, so I am hoping that I can meet that for my maximum leader. So we will be waiting to see what the margin is going to be like.”

And Minister John Saldivar made good on that promise. At the end of the counting in the early hours of this morning, Khalid Belisle and his team of six councilors for the United Democratic Party emerged victorious for the Belmopan Municipal Elections. Trouncing the P.U.P.’s Jose Chacon and his six running mates, VIP’s Hubert Enriquez and his councilor hopefuls, as well as Independents Richard Smith and Wilfredo Guerrero, the U.D.P. won comfortably. Belisle was confident going in to this election.

Khalid Belisle, U.D.P. Mayoral Candidate

“This is a manifestation of the hard work we’ve put in Belmopan; of the hard work we have done on this campaign. It is clear that Belmopan is with us and we just gotta do what we do today and we will get the result that we are hoping for nuh.”

Andrea Polanco

“So I know that there is a little over nine thousand registered voters in Belmopan. How many ah den deh yuh think yuh cud bring out today?”

Khalid Belisle

Khalid Belisle

“We’re hoping to pull at least four thousand of that nine thousand out here today, maybe more.”

Andrea Polanco

“So, I saw Minister Saldivar out here in the crowd. Yuh think he help yuh bring out some ah di people out yah today?”

Khalid Belisle

“Most definitely, most definitely. He has been spearheading the work here for the past two years now, in conjunction with the city council, but it has been a tremendous push courtesy of the Prime Minister and Party Leader, the great Honorable Dean Barrow, who has put over six million dollars in Belmopan. We started the work over two years ago and no can say that is election gimmicks.”

And confident they were. Supporters, majority UDP, stayed up well beyond their bed-time. About one hundred and fifty supporters were still camping out in front of the Comprehensive High School at two a.m waiting to hear the results. Belisle spoke with us via phone.

Khalid Belisle, Mayor Elect

“We needed a shot of energy and the people of Belmopan decided to give us and so we are looking forward to three years of nonstop progress for our city.”
