Jervis Valencia Goes On Deadly Rampage in Ghost Town

Hilberto Romero

While residents across the Old Capital were absorbed in the counting of ballots on Wednesday night, gunfire erupted near the corners of Mayflower and Vernon streets where a group of men were standing.  Sometime after nine o’clock, a succession of gunshots was heard in the Ghost Town area.  It would later be learned that the shooting incident claimed the life of one man and left another injured.  Thirty-six-year-old Moses Gonguez and twenty-three-year-old Triston Gordon were inside a nearby yard along with four others when they came under fire from a lone gunman.  The shooter has since been identified as thirty-two-year-old Jervis Valencio.  It is reported that Valencio, who also resides in the neighborhood, assaulted the men with a nine millimeter handgun, shooting Gonguez multiple times to various parts of the body and injuring Gordon in the left leg. An investigation would subsequently lead to the discovery of the lifeless body of Gonguez lying on the ground inside the yard.  Valencio then attempted to flee the scene before running into a team of officers responding to the incident.  Despite being ordered to surrender, Valencio trained his weapon on the police.  Under imminent threat of danger, they responded by firing a barrage of shots at Valencio, hitting him in the neck and chest.

Supt. Hilberto Romero, O.C., C.I.B., Eastern Division

“Valencia pointed a nine millimeter pistol towards…he was ordered to stop and he refused to cooperate. Again the nine millimeter pistol that he had was recovered beside his body that was on the street. It contained an extended magazine with several live rounds of ammunition. The officers were responding to shots being fired in the immediate area. The incident occurred in a small area, the officers heard the shots and they took up positions to see if anyone would come in their direction and if anyone was fleeing from where the shots were heard. We don’t know if it is related, but a couple shots were fired, the police responded and no one was shot.”

Valencio and Gordon were rushed to the K.H.M.H. where Valencio remains in a critical condition, while after receiving treatment, Gordon was released.  Gonguez’s body lies at the morgue awaiting a post mortem examination.
