Brothers Stand Trial for Rape of Belize City Woman

Jermaine Stevens

A jury of five women and four men will decide the fate of siblings, Jermaine and Austin Stevens, who are currently on trial for rape and abetment to rape, respectively. The brothers were arrested and charged back in March of 2012 for the rape of a then eighteen-year-old female. According to the victim, whilst staying at a house with Austin, he, with the help of another male known to her only as a red skin guy, held her down and dragged her to a bed where the younger brother, Jermaine, raped her. Because the third person was never identified, he was never arrested and charged. Since the trial began over a week ago, the victim, who is now twenty-one, took the stand and testified that on the day in question, her cousin with whom she was boarding was not at home and she immediately went to get clothes to change and leave. As she exited the bathroom, she was ambushed by the three men. In trial, both brothers gave sworn testimonies. While Jermaine told the court that he never had sexual intercourse with the victim, Austin admitted to having sex with her, but claimed that it was consensual and not rape. Of note, however, is that both brothers refused to give the police their DNA.
