19 Year Old Arraigned for Murder of Herbert Bowden

Ernesto Vasquez

Nineteen-year-old Ernesto Vasquez of Antelope Street Extension was remanded to the Belize Central Prison for the killing of Herbert Bowden.  Vasquez was unrepresented in Magistrate’s Court today when he was charged with a single count of murder. While no plea was taken, Magistrate Herbert Panton asked the accused why he was named in the murder considering that he was a student. The accused told the court that he was indeed a student pursuing social work studies and that he was in court only because he was said to resemble the person who committed the murder. The teenager also said that there are witnesses, his landlord and his girlfriend, who can testify to his whereabouts on the day of Bowden’s killing.  Due to the nature of the offense, Vasquez was remanded to the Belize Central prison without bail and is to return to court on April seventeenth. Twenty-nine year old Bowden, a Tibruce Street resident, was fatally shot on February twenty sixth when he in a yard on Cedar Street where he dismantled old vehicles for scrap iron and parts. At the time of the shooting, neighbors indicated that they didn’t believe Bowden was the intended target.
