Gilroy Usher’s Press Conference Falls Apart in Port Loyola

Election Day 2015 is less than forty-eight hours away and the two major political parties, together with their mayoral and councilor candidates, are fueling their respective machineries.  On Wednesday, both P.U.P. and U.D.P. will be mobilizing supporters en masse to and from polling stations across all nine municipalities.  It is no secret that money, in the form of inducement, will be exchanged for votes.  In fact, over the years, the seemingly unethical practice has become entrenched in the electoral process; a tradition in which both outfits have participated freely.  So, when a press conference was called this morning by P.U.P. Port Loyola Standard Bearer Gilroy Usher Senior to address the matter with his constituents, we found it quite interesting.  Initially, Usher would go on to state that the gathering was a non-partisan initiative, despite the fact that he has offered himself for candidacy under the People’s United Party in the upcoming general elections.  Secondly, the audience was comprised primarily of campaigners presently under his employ.  It’s a glaring contradiction, one of many that would unfold during his hour-long rave.  Unfortunately, when we tried to point out those ironies, Usher would hear nothing of it.  Instead, he attempted to prohibit the media from asking questions.

Gilroy Usher Sr., P.U.P. Standard Bearer, Port Loyola

“Concerning the funds that politicians give out, there is nothing wrong if they give you money.  There is nothing wrong with that because you must remember, remember that the monies that they are giving away are the monies that belong to we the taxpayers, da di money weh belong to we di taxpayers…  Alright, so like the Petrocaribe money and so, we have to pay back that.  We have to pay back the Petrocaribe money.  So if they use the Petrocaribe money to give people on election day, if dehn give you it we wahn seh tek it atta dah we wahn haftu pay it back.  Dah we haftu pay it back but then vote with your conscience that’s what we are saying, vote with your conscience on election day.  That’s the whole purpose of this press conference. Big money is used to induce people to vote a particular way.”

“But who uses the big money?”

Gilroy Usher Sr.

“A number of elected politicians.”

Jules Vasquez

“Okay, well you are speaking.  From which party?”

Gilroy Usher Sr.

“I’m not saying all.  I’m not saying all.”

Jules Vasquez

“Let’s go through them then.”

Gilroy Usher Sr.

“The people know their politicians.”

Jules Vasquez

“Well then if the people know, you know.”

Gilroy Usher Sr.

“No man, I am not thinking for people.  I noh di think fi people… The purpose of this press conference is not for you to advance your political agenda.  It’s not for you to advance your political agenda.  Well I’ve answered you already.  Next question because I done answer you already totally separate issue.”
