Crop Start Date Announced

Gabriel Martinez

The 2015 sugar cane crop season will get underway on Monday, January twenty-sixth at ten in the morning. The pronouncement came this afternoon after a lengthy session between all stakeholders in Orange Walk. It signals the official end of an impasse which almost destroyed the industry while seeing the emergence of two new Associations under the auspices of an amended Sugar Industry Act that was signed into law on Wednesday. The announcement was made by Chairman of the Sugar Industry Control Board Gabriel Martinez.

Gabriel Martinez, Chairman, SICB

“The parties present here, namely the three associations – the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association, the Corozal sugar Cane Producers Association and the Progressive Sugar Cane Producers Association, along with ASR/B.S.I. and our Deputy prime Minister, have agreed that the start of the 2015 sugar cane crop will be on Monday, January twenty-sixth at ten o’clock in the morning. The Sugar Industry Control Board wants to take this opportunity to congratulate everyone who has worked tirelessly to come to this moment here and we are so happy to be able to pronounce this date as agreed by the stakeholders. We wish all the caneros and caneras a productive and a blessed sugar crop 2015.”

The document signed at the end of the announcement is a statement of commitment from the parties that within a year they will work to come up with a strategic development plan to guide the industry into the future.
