P.U.P. Ready for Municipal Elections?

Francis Fonseca

Earlier we showed you P.U.P. Leader Francis Fonseca’s response to the announcement of his opponent in Freetown. He wasn’t too impressed or concerned. Fonseca has other things on his mind right now, like the municipal elections scheduled for March fourth. It is believed the results of that election will be a reliable indicator of which party will be occupying office in Belmopan, whenever general elections are called. Today News Five asked Fonseca point blank about resources. The party wasn’t able to put together much in a recent by-election in Cayo North, but a by-election in one area isn’t quite as significant as countrywide municipals.

Francis Fonseca, P.U.P. Leader

“Money, when we reflected on it and analyzed it…yes money was a factor in Cayo North but it certainly would not have changed the outcome. We feel that we are in a good position for the municipal elections. We will have all the resources that we need. Obviously we are not going to be able to match the U.D.P. dollar for dollar, and that’s not our objective, but we feel that we have a strong, effective campaign that is well financed for the municipal elections. In the north we’re doing very well. We have a very strong team in place. I was in Dangriga yesterday. Again we’re mounting a very spirited, strong campaign in Dangriga. In Punta Gorda…I was there recently and we’ll be back there in the next few days…again a very strong, effective campaign. Belmopan is looking very, very good. I will be there over the weekend in Belmopan campaigning and working with that team. Again we have a very strong, effective team. And all over the country…Benque…San Ignacio will be very challenging coming out of the Cayo North by-election, but again there everybody is fighting. San Pedro is looking very good. So I think we have a very good opportunity of winning many of these municipalities and there is a strong sense of unity at these municipal levels in the Party. I think people are hungry to win. And we have good teams, we have good leaders of those municipal teams, good team members and effective campaign organization supporting them.”
