IICA and O.A.S. Partner in Agribusiness

Starret Green

Partnering with IICA are the Ministry of Natural Resources and Agriculture and the Organization of American States. Ambassador Starret Green says that while the linkages have already been established between both the agriculture and the tourism industries, there a many challenges that have stifled its success, specifically in terms of communication.

Starret Green, Ambassador, O.A.S.

“There are a number of challenges that both agriculture and tourism face. One of them that I discovered just recently is that the right people in both sectors are not talking…there is no communication. Who is doing what? Who wants what? Who will be willing to buy what? And so that’s an indication that the linkages that exist between both sectors are not being utilized. I cannot think of any other two sectors other than agriculture and tourism that have so many linkages that complement each other and so Jean and I are here today to ensure that we use our influence and that of our organizations to bring together the people that can make the difference. Now the idea of linkages between the agricultural and tourism sectors is not new. But why we are here is that there is a sense that enough is not being done and there is a focus on the export market for what is produced. But there is also need, we believe, for what is produced locally can be used locally as well. It’s in that context that we are here.”
