Barnett to Take On Francis Fonseca

Carla Barnett

As we mentioned, Barnett will be butting heads against a seasoned politician, a three-time winner in Freetown, a former Minister of Education and Attorney- General as well as the leader of the People’s United Party. One would say that’s a formidable opponent for a novice to tackle, and this morning Barnett was asked point-blank if it’s only a matter of her taking up space because the U.D.P. can’t find anybody else to contest Fonseca.

“I don’t think I am known as somebody who sets out to waste time. I believe that there is a strong possibility of winning that seat with support and hard work. Yes there is a vacuum in Freetown, but the vacuum is on both sides if I can be blunt. There is not a lot of presence from the current representative in Freetown, and when you talk to the people of Freetown that is what they say…that’s what they say. Statistically speaking the seat is relatively marginal in the past two elections, relatively marginal. That suggests to me that there is indeed every possibility of taking that seat with proper leadership and with hard work in the name of the people of Belize. You heard the Party Leader this morning pledge the support of the Party. I am counting on that support. But it’s going to be a lot of hard work on my part, and on the part of the Freetown Committee, and even wider than that. So we’re going in expecting to win.”
