Mother and Daughter Arraigned for Possession of Controlled Drug

Rosita Polanco

Also in court this morning, a forty-eight year old mother and her thirty year old daughter, both employed as school wardens in Belize City, were arraigned on a charge of drug trafficking after police found a bag with one hundred and eight grams of weed. Rosita Polanco, and her daughter, Doreen, were arraigned before Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith for Possession of a Controlled Drugs, for the purpose of drug trafficking.  Rosita wasted no time in pleading guilty and the prosecutor indicated he will withdraw the charge from Doreen, who was free to go. But Rosita told the court that she had no knowledge of the weed and that she had just returned to her house when police arrived to conduct a search. She also said she gave no resistance to the police and was surprised about the find.  The Chief Magistrate subsequently entered an equivocal plea of not guilty on behalf of Rosita. But unfortunately for Doreen, she will have to join her mother at trial. The police say they acted on a tip and found the weed on Tuesday in a compartment of Rosita’s fence on Antelope Street Extension. Both women are due back in court on April tenth.
