Janae Matute Receives 1st Installment From G.O.B.

Janae Matute

News Five is especially pleased tonight to report that the government has started making good on payments due to young student, Janae Matute. Matute was born with cerebral palsy which was attributed to medical error. Following a protracted legal battle, in April 2014 the CCJ awarded the Matute family two point five million dollars in compensation, to be used for Janae’s care. But up to the end of December 2014, the family had received absolutely nothing. The media brought it to the attention of Prime Minister Dean Barrow, and that’s when the ball started rolling. This morning, News Five spoke to attorney for the Matute family Fred Lumor, who told us that the family has already received one significant instalment.

Fred Lumor, Attorney for Matute Family

“The government has paid three hundred thousand dollars to the family…this would be about two weeks ago, and they suggested that they are going to make proposals for us to agree for the payment of the balance of two point two million incrementally. I hadn’t heard anything, but this morning about five minutes ago Mr. Hawke, the Deputy Solicitor-General, has asked that I should send a letter to them proposing the incremental payments that would be preferable to the family, whether payment monthly or quarterly. I have suggested to him that I think quarterly payments to the family would be preferable, but I promised him that before the end of the day I would send a letter to them incorporating my proposals for the incremental payment…meaning that they make four payments in any one year, to see whether it would take two, three or four years for them to complete the payment.”

Fred Lumor

“Sir do you feel government is acting in good faith at this point? That they are actively trying to make good on this payment?”

Fred Lumor

“So far I can say that I’ve seen some good faith gestures coming from them, because Mr. Hawke this morning approached me with the proposal, so I will give them the benefit of the doubt, and send the proposals and see the response I get from them. So yes, they have shown good faith so far.”

“Could you tell us the reaction of the family to finally getting something after this long drawn out fight?”

Fred Lumor

“I can tell you when Mrs. Georgia Matute climbed those steps and came to my office and saw the check, you could see her eyes were bright and then the tears just started pouring from her eyes. I had to give her a big hug. I can tell you that they were excited.”

The doctor who was found culpable for Janae’s condition is Raju Meenavalli, who since retired from the Ministry of Health.

  1. Concerned says:

Last time i checked Dr. Raju works right at Southern Regional Hospital in Dangriga Town because he is the Gyne there and still delivering babies because he is the one who delivered my sister’s daughter just the other day. They need to look into that retirement properly because maybe he is supposed to be retired after that malpractice. SO the question is how is he still working delivering babies and WHY?????????????
