Cane Fields of B.S.C.F.A.’s Finance Committee Chairman is Torched

Javier Keme

The B.S.C.F.A.’s Finance Committee Chairman, Javier Keme, has been in the forefront of the move to hold off on signing the agreement with ASR/B.S.I.  It was an unsuccessful effort, largely because farmers could not stand in the face of very real economic hardships. The agreement has been signed, and all stakeholders now more towards the starting of the crop at the soonest possible time. But there have been casualties, and Keme is one of them. Over the weekend some of his cane-fields were torched, presumably to send the message that the stance he and others took is not appreciated. Keme told News five he got the bad news from a family member.

Javier Keme, Chairman, Finance Committee, B.S.C.F.A.

“I was informed Friday morning about nine-thirty….one of the neighbours to the cane field called my brother-in-law’s sister because he didn’t have my contact number. So my brother-in-law called me and gave me the news that some of th3 cane field was burning, but he was not sure how much. So I went to verify it after that and it is more or less of seven to eight acres of leftover plant cane about sixteen months…that’s pretty much a high yield cause it’s a new planted cane and I expected from there about a hundred and eighty to two hundred tons. And it was not only my cane field…another gentleman that was about a fourth of a mile from where mines was burnt was also set on fire…probably the same night.”

“You think it was deliberate because of your involvement? You’ve been called extremist, you’ve been called radical. Do you think it was a direct result of that?”

Javier Keme

“Yah well of course I was expecting this because that is one of the weaknesses that we have as farmers…any misunderstanding, any problems that you have with somebody else that’s a form. I have suffered this two years ago and they burnt about six hundred tons two years ago. I was expecting this to happen before.”

In monetary terms, it’s a loss of twelve thousand dollars, but that doesn’t take into account the many months of intensive labour which has gone up in flames.
