What’s the future of Puerto Azul?

Remember the Puerto Azul Project…a proposed mega-tourism development within the Lighthouse Reef Atoll at Sandbore and Northern Cayes? It has been out of the headlines for quite some time, but the proposed billion dollar exclusive, high-end resort by Italian investors is very much still alive. While the project received an initial green light by the Cabinet Subcommittee, environmental groups have come out against the project because of the perceived damage to the ecosystems. Today, we asked Chief Environmental Officer, Martin Alegria for an update on the project.

“From the Department of the Environment’s perspective, what we are responsible for is the environmental screening. As far as I recall, last year—almost a year now—we had developed a terms of reference for an EIA to be developed. At that stage it’s up to the developer/investor. The ball is in his court, you could say, where the development of the EIA report should be done in accordance with that term of reference. And that is where we are up to now…where a lot of the ground work, ground research, studies should be underway in order to develop that EIA report.”
