Fisherman Gunned Down in the City

Pedro Ayuso Jr.

A fisherman was heading home to Oleander Street in the City on Tuesday night when he was ambushed in his boat. Pedro Ayuso Junior, also known as Pete, was in the area of Belcan Bridge when someone travelling in another skiff opened fire on him. The salvo of bullets found their mark on the father of three; he was rushed to the K.H.M.H. The murder has left the family of the twenty-nine year old saddened and in shock. The motive for the attack is unknown, but his murder is not linked to any of the homicides that have occurred recently in the city. News Five’s Duane Moody reports on the latest murder in the City.

It has been rather quiet in the streets of the Old Capital in the past week, but around seven on Tuesday night, that silence was shattered when a Belize City man was killed near the BelCan Bridge. Twenty-nine year old Pedro Ayuso Junior was murdered as he headed home via a boat in the Haulover Creek. A gunman, also traveling in a skiff, came up on him and opened fire in his direction. Moments later, Ayuso Junior’s father would be called in to identify his son’s body.

“First my cousin called me and told me that the police will call me and then the police called me. I had to drive down and went by Brads. But when I got there, they told me that they need to show me a picture to see if I can identify if it was my son. As I see the picture, I know that it is my son. They said that they heard the shooting, but it look like it was up in the river. He was in a boat, but the engine dah fifteen horsepower and the other boat dah fast boat. So that’s what I get and they circle him and fire…I noh know how much shots, but two catch him.”

Ayuso Junior was returning home from dropping off a close friend in the Conch Shell Bay area when he was ambushed. The boat drifted to the bank of the creek near the former compound of Advance Advertizing. Police arrived shortly after to find the body with multiple gunshot injuries.

“Inside a skiff, a male person was observed motionless; he was taken to the K.H.M.H. where he was pronounced dead thereafter. He was identified as Pedro Ayuso of an Oleander Street address. He had two gunshot wounds to the abdomen and one to the hand.”

Ayuso Junior is not known as a troublemaker, says Superintendent Hilberto Romero of the Crime Investigation Branch. He was, however, arraigned back in 2013 along with twenty-nine year old Walter Beaton and thirty-six year old Kirk Dougal for the trafficking of approximately fifty pounds of marijuana. Nevertheless, his murder has come as a shock to his family and police say that they are yet to establish a motive.

Supt. Hilberto Romero

“We have not established a motive at this time. This shooting incident happened in the river; he was in a vessel. The only information that we have is that another vessel was heard speeding off after the shooting.”
