Professor Bain Takes UWI to Court in Jamaica

Brendan Bain

A week-long session in the Supreme Court of Jamaica commenced earlier today, following a lawsuit filed in 2014 by Professor Brendan Bain.  The litigation involving the University of the West Indies is the result of an apparent violation of due process when he was removed as head of the institution’s Caribbean HIV/AIDS Regional Training Network.  The professor testified as an expert witness in a legal challenge by Caleb Orozco in which he is seeking a repeal of Section Fifty-three of Belize’s criminal code.  As it stands, there is a ten-year sentence for anyone who is tried and found guilty of sodomy.  Subsequent to Bain’s testimony, members of the LGBT community, including UNIBAM, protested that his statement resulted in a loss of confidence in the CHART program.  Professor Bain is seeking damages from UWI.  A panel of three judges, including justices Lennox Campbell, Paulette Williams and Frank Williams are presiding over the matter.
