Belize City Woman Fined for Marijuana Cultivation and Possession of Pipe

Olympia King

In December 2014, forty-four year old mother, Olympia King, of Saint Joseph Street, Belize City, was found guilty of cultivation of marijuana and possession of a pipe used for marijuana smoking. But she was spared from going to jail when the Senior Magistrate Sharon Fraser refrained from imposing a sentence immediately.   She did advice that the offenses she was found guilty of, specifically under Section eighteen of the Misuse and Drugs Act, carry a penalty similar to that of drug trafficking and that she was liable for a fine and confinement. The senior magistrate also advised King that she must prepare for the eventuality since she had a conviction for drug possession going back to 2012. King was to be sentenced on January sixth, 2015, but she asked the court for time to seek legal representation. Well, today she appeared with senior attorneys, Richard Dickie Bradley and Ellis Arnold, to plea on her behalf. They successfully did, preventing King from going to jail and she was imposed a fine of ten thousand dollars, which she has until March thirty-first, 2015. She also got a suspended sentence of six months during which she is not to get into further trouble. Other family members, who were charged at the time of the bust, were acquitted of the offenses.
