Belizean Nurse Charged with Bronx Homicide

Cherrylee Young

A forty-one year old nurse aide originally from Belize, who worked at the University Nursing Home in New York, has been charged for the killing of a resident of the home and will face a grand jury on Tuesday in the Bronx Criminal Court. Cherrylee Young is accused of beating seventy-seven year old Frank Mercado back on December eighth. During the struggle, Mercado reportedly got cut on the buttocks when he fell on a table. He was transported hours later by staff to the Montefiore Medical Center, where he died. A post mortem revealed that the elderly man bled to death because a piece of the table pierced his rectum causing internal bleeding. Young was arrested a day later and allegedly told police that Mercado, who was visually impaired, hit her first and that she hit back in self-defense. Employees of the home, however, told police they saw Young holding Mercado against a wall in his room. Young was arrested on the December ninth and appeared in the Bronx Criminal Court where she agreed to testify before a grand jury to see if there is any evidence against her.  The incident occurred at the University Nursing Home on Grand Avenue in the Bronx sometime before midday on Monday, December eighth. Assistant District Attorney, Nancy Borko, has since indicated that the hearing before the grand jury is set and that the charges may change depending on the grand jury’s findings. The University Nursing Home has since made a statement expressing its regrets for the death of Mercado, who was with the home for four years. Young has since been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.
