BSCFA Director Says Caneros Are Being Cornered Into Signing Agreement

Alfredo Ortega

We note again that the impact will be felt on the ground by farmers, not by attorneys in a Courtroom. The reality is that as things stand now, there is absolutely no stability in the industry, and none of the stakeholders know what will happen next. In his press conference on Thursday, Prime Minister Dean Barrow appeared to be washing his hands of the BSCFA, and indeed backing away from the very volatile situation. His new stance has had tremendous effect on cane-farmers, according to the BSCFA’s Alfredo Ortega.

Alfredo Ortega, Director, Orange Walk Branch, BSCFA

“The situation is that the farmers are being pushed to sign on something that they know is not beneficial to them but because of the situation, because of what the Prime Minister said yesterday, farmers are being cornered. Farmers really show signs of fretting because of what was said yesterday that if that agreement is not signed there would be no crop. I have had many calls from farmers yesterday and even late last night saying that if the Prime Minister is not with us, where are we? So we would want to see a crop start and if there is no other way then let’s sign the agreement. It is a pity and it makes me very sad that farmers have to be pushed around into this situation whereby they have to find their situation corner and they are obliged to sign something even though they know that it will be hurting for them in the further run.”

Barrows’ stance has effects on a few politically minded numnuts, yes, which includes Mr Ortega. Can we still not comprehend and understand that it is Ms Sheppard, Mr Ortega, and the Unions that are avoiding any any agreement to be signed? It is NOT the farmers. The farmers have no say here. The above groups are misleading them, for the money. Ms Sheppard is in for the money, thats all. She has no heart for the farmers, and neither does Ortega. Like I’ve said before, the BSCFA stands in the way of the farmer, and the sooner they fall, the sooner this country will get back on its feet. Why Court? Can someone please tell me what gains come from letting the cane rot on the field just because of COURT?? Who can explain to me that that is not DUMB to the uttermost extent!!!! ???

  3. CEO says:

Hell with The PM! You the cane farmers are the ones that work the back breaking tasks to keep the cane industry going and you are the ones who make the least. The “fat rats” will never care about you the farmer.

Stand united and suffer as you forge ahead with what needs to be done for a better future. Do you remember when Barrow was running for office and there were some problems with the cane industry: he stood with you then and encouraged you to fight for your rights. A few votes and few years later, you are now “RADICALS”. This about it!

Too bad that after all your efforts those that opposed what you are doing will also benefit from what you are doing!

Teddy, Belizean, Belizean especially if u don’t know the facts keep ur mouth shut. It is Lucilo Teck a big UDP supporter from Corozal that acquired the services of Sheppard. This is not about PUP, this is about the UDP playing politics like always. Many just talk for the sake of talking, many dont know what working at the cane field is.

So this is the look of a GREEDY MAN, a man that has wasted more fair trade money on himself than can be accounted for. Please dissolve fair trade and let this PARASITE AND THE OTHERS LIKE HIM
STARVE actually have to do a days work to feed themselves. The fat LOSER from Caledonia branch lost 2 elections, while in place built a bodega at his house to store all the fertilizer from free trade, is that not STEALING from fair trade AND the cane farmers? Only he gets the fertilizer! Then he tells his group to vote NO CROP. While he lives on fair trade money and the farmers STARVE.
