NTUCB Reaffirms Support for BSCFA

Rebecca Suazo

An organization has remained in the corner of the B.S.C.F.A. is the National Trade Union Congress of Belize which reaffirmed its solidarity with the farmers earlier today. The NTUCB demonstrated its encouragement for the association a few weeks ago and came under fire from government for being arrogant in the extreme.  Notwithstanding the castigation, the umbrella organization has stood with the cañeros and today responded to statements made by the Prime Minister at a press conference on Thursday. The NTUCB is urging farmers to remain united at this critical juncture since there seems to be a plot afoot to divide and conquer the association.

Rebecca Suazo, General Secretary, NTUCB

“The NTUCB met and felt it pertinent to issue a press release in support of the cane farmers, the BSCFA.  We’re supporting the cane farmers because we know that the sugar cane is a very vital industry to our nation and as a union, as the NTUCB, negotiation is very important.  One of the things that we always stress is that whenever we are into negotiations that it’s very important not to put anybody in a position that somebody will come out on the wrong end.  So, during negotiations, as far as we see it and know it, that if an agreement has already been, is already in effect that agreement usually carries over until another agreement is signed.  So in that light the NTUCB is supporting the BSCFA in trying to unite to try to get the best deal possible.  So we find it very, we listened to the press conference, we had a discussion on it and we have our views but right now the NTUCB is standing beside the Belize Sugar Cane Farmer Association that to try to make sure that there is a crop and that farmers do not come out with the baddest end of the stick and that is our position and whatever we can do to ensure that that happens we more than likely are willing to encourage the cane farmers to stick together, to unite because once a division occurs that is when the conquering takes place.  So we are standing BSCFA, the cane farmers, to hang tight to try to work out the best deal for themselves now and for the future of this country.”

The irony here is that of the 800 or so cane cutters who work in the sugar industry, only the 87 employees of BSI’s cane fields are unionized. The private cane farmers will never allow thier cutters to be represented and protected by a union.

They need all the support they can get! Let’s solve one problem at a time!
