More persons questioned for missing border funds

Story PictureAs in the case of the Treasury Department and the Belize City Council, Benque police are still investigating the thousands of dollars missing at the Western Border’s Management Agency and no arrests have been made. While police have their eyes keenly on the Agency’s former supervisor, Julio Santos, they are also watching another employee of the Agency who dispatches the monies to the bank. According to Benque Police, the dispatcher would prepare the funds and hand it over to Santos who would deposit it in the Agency’s account. News Five understands that it is customary at the Agency for both dispatcher and depositor to sign a log when the chain of custody changes between the two. During the time when monies allegedly went missing, six deposits were made, but Santos’ signature appeared only once in the log. And while they try to decipher what exactly happened, police are also talking to an auditor, who is reviewing the records. General Manager of the Agency, Gonzalo Rosado reported the matter to police last Thursday, more than a week after Santos was dismissed from the Agency. Santos, it is claimed, is well placed politically. At City Hall an initial sum of twenty-four thousand plus dollars is said to be missing. The prime minister said on July tenth that arrests will be made. But Mayor Zenaida Moya Flowers maintains it is a case of under-depositing and not missing monies. The D.P.P. is said to be reviewing this file.
