Is Mervin Underwood’s Early Morning Murder Related?

Mervin Underwood

Kareem Lopez was in the headlines dating back to 2006 for a slew of charges which included murder and attempted murder. He was out on bail for a November drug possession charge when he was murdered. This morning, on Central American Boulevard before seven o’clock, Mervin Underwood was executed near Pound Yard Bridge where he was waiting for a Cisco Construction Bus to take him to work.  It is speculated that there may be a link between the two murders, but that is not confirmed.  Duane Moody has this story.

Duane Moody, Reporting

There was an early morning murder today in the streets of the Old Capital. Thirty year old Mervin Anthony Underwood was shot and killed as he waited for transportation to work. Underwood had just left his house on Waterlane in Belize City and stood at the corner of Cemetery Road and Collet Canal when a lone gunman fired several shots at him. He was hit to the head and died within seconds. Former coworkers heard the blasts as the bus approached the stop, but never did they think “Bigga” was the target.

Francis Woods, Proprietor, Cisco Construction

“Mervin was about to board the bus. I think the bus was about four hundred feet away. Actually the folks in the bus, that were already in the bus, heard the gunshots, but they weren’t sure if it was pop-shots or dynamite or what. And when they got to the corner where they normally pick-up Mervin and they saw him there…they recognized his shirt and then they recognized him shortly after. So he was about to get on the bus shortly before seven and they shot him.”

Police arrived shortly after to process the scene.

“When police went to the scene, they saw a male of dark complexion who was identified later as thirty-two year old Mervin Anthony Underwood lying in the vicinity of the Pound Yard Bridge dead with an apparent gunshot wound to the head. He was transported to the K.H.M.H. where his body awaits a postmortem examination as the investigations continue.”

Underwood was routinely on his way to work at CISCO Constructions when his life was callously taken. But although he has been through a lot in his young life; that is, losing two brothers to gun violence and surviving a shooting back in March of 2005; he was the soils lab technician at the construction company.

Francis Woods

“We really noh know exactly why. Mervin has been; this March would have made three years he is working with the company. He’s the soils lab technician; he was responsible for the quality control of the concrete. He was on site a lot, all over the city, different sites so we are little puzzle. He is a very quiet guy, very humble. I think he recently had a baby so he was serious into his being responsible. It certainly has affected morale. This one is very close to home to us. It is very bad when someone loses his life. This one, he’s been with us for three years. Every morning when we have devotion out here, he’s there. We deal with him every day, but it is hard for everybody. But we all know that we just have to keep on going and keep on doing the right thing.”

So who could have wanted the demise of “Bigga”?

Hilberto Romero

Supt. Hilberto Romero, O.C., C.I.B., Eastern Division

“We don’t have much leads to go on in the second murder. We don’t have anybody in custody and that much coming from the shooting on Flamboyant Street likewise cause the victim is unable to speak to us at this time.  The murder this morning, the deceased was a family member to a person from the Yarborough area. That is all that we have and again we are recording statements. So that case as we speak, we can see if we can come up with any suspect.”
