Rock bands seek unity through music

Story PictureAnd while the veterans of the Belizean musical scene are fighting to defend their territory, some young up and coming Belizean performers are also presenting a unified front on Tenth night. Rock bands Echoes, Aquarius, and Zyro Dcplyn, and a number of special surprise performers will be putting on a “Unity Concert” at the Putt Putt Bar and Grill on Saturday night. News Five caught up with Manager, Orson Elrington and Aquarius Band leader Herschel Armstrong during rehearsals today.

Orson Elrington, Manager Putt-Putt Bar and Grill
“The whole idea was that the concert was supposed to be called the “battle of the bands,” like the battle of the bands of old. However, when we met with the members of the bands, they didn’t want to do that. They said we have too many battles already outside of bands, so let’s try to do something that gonna be unified. So I said that’s a perfect idea and goes right along the lines of what I am thinking. So we came up with the idea of the Unity Concert where we would show that through music, you can unite different cultures, different race, if you have a single goal, you can create great music.”

Herschel Armstrong, Leader, Aquarius Band
“I like the whole idea of us trying to bring across this type of music to Belizeans because there are not a lot of places you can go to listen to that. Belizeans, usually it’s just mostly Reggae, Soca, Punta, that’s the more popular type. But there is an audience out there for alternative and rock music and we just want to try and put that out there.”

“Definitely guys you have to come out tomorrow night to enjoy this show at the Putt Putt. It will be one of a kind and Aquarius in fact is going on a small hiatus after this, so this might be the last time you hear us for a while, so come out people, it’s going to be good.”

Ticket prices for the Unity Concert are ten dollars before eight p.m. and fifteen after. The organisers are also extending a special discount to all Carnival participants who come in costume and display their stamp.

In related news, the winners of the Belizean Poets contest were announced last night at Putt Putt’s Lyrical Lounge. First place went to Erwin X, second to Kalilah Enriquez, and third was Therese Young Belisle.
