Is G.O.B. Dividing Farmers to Force a Resolution?

Javier Keme

While BGYEA has been ordered to go back to the negotiating table, BSCFA in the north is also awaiting word to start negotiations. But up to news time, there’s been no communication from B.S.I. or from the government on the start of negotiations. That’s the bottom line, but in the meantime there is a lot happening between the lines. As you heard earlier in the newscast, both the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister have requested the exclusion of the negotiating team when meeting with the Committee of Management and the eighteen branch directors. That, to the farmers and to others at the B.S.C.F.A., comes across as the very common, but effective divide and conquer ploy. It’s been the cause of some of the confusion. When the B.S.C.F.A. comes out of a meeting with G.O.B., there’s one impression, and when the farmers speak in mass there is another. On Sunday the B.S.C.F.A.’s Finance Committee Chairman, Javier Keme, spoke pointedly on the issue.

Javier Keme, Chairman, Finance Committee, B.S.C.F.A.

“Maybe the intention of the Committee of Management and the eighteen directors was good, but it was a mistake by the Chairman of the Committee of Management, and I will tell you why. This isn’t the first time this has happened. In the time of Leonardo Cano, the same thing happened where they invited the eighteen directors and Mr. Cano told them that they could not tell him who he could take to a meeting, I will take who I want to take. And in this respect it was a mistake by the Committee of Management because the interpretation of political manipulation in this is clear. So to dispel doubts we hope that the Chairman in the future will commit that this won’t happen again because the image we need to send is one of unity – cane-farmers with their directors, and directors with cane-farmers. And I want to respectfully ask the Chairman of the Committee of Management to promise that this will not happen again.”

News Five has been informed that there is a B.S.C.F.A. meeting planned for Tuesday with the eighteen branch directors. But so far, no word from B.S.I.
