Education Conference Underway in Belize City

The Caribbean Union of Teachers, hosted by the B.N.T.U., is presently meeting in Belize City.  It is the first time a congress of this nature, where as many as eighteen unions from across the region, is being held in country.  The biennial conference got underway on Friday at the Biltmore.  Today, we caught up with Thecla Fitz, Regional Director of Caribbean Global Business and Partner Development for Laureate Online Education.  The organization provides academic incentives for teachers pursuing higher education.  It is also co-sponsor of the ongoing event.

“We developed a partnership of the Caribbean Union of Teachers some three to four years ago.  It’s an opportunity to allow teachers an opportunity to pursue programs throughout our network, even if the universities are physically campused.  We understand that there are several challenges that teachers face in wanting to pursue higher learning so therefore we have offered them programs which are customized to the needs of education stakeholders in the Caribbean and through that partnership the Caribbean Union of Teachers, and by extension Belize National Teachers Union, we offer grants to make the education accessible because we know that education is expensive but we want to ensure that everybody has an opportunity.  So therefore, because we cannot give scholarships for the universities which offer their degrees online which is much cheaper than being on a physical campus, we still have to make it accessible.  So how we make it accessible is by offering discounts that are as low as offering a grant or a PAT Scholarship to pursue and our presence here is because we sponsored or we were part sponsor of the Belize Teachers Union hosting the Caribbean Union of Teachers.  We believe that as an institution that we do not only offer educational opportunities for teachers but we help in their professional development.”
