Football and Basketball stats with James Adderley

Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.

It proved to be a most entertaining ballgame as Verdes FC hosted Placencia Texmar Assassins yesterday inside the Norman Broaster Stadium as both ball clubs look to grab a piece of the league standings coming out of week 7. In the opening minutes, under a constant drizzle, the home team establishes itself as the protagonist and look to score early when this center from off the right wing finds Gilroy Thurton who should have done better with this attempt from pointblank range. The visitor tries to get something going off this set piece triggered by Kyle Flowers only to be foiled by Benito Morreira in the Verdes goal.

When Rodney Pacheco gloats this set piece to Orlando Jimenez, the glancing header makes outside the far upright. Talk about a header people, check this one from Louis Torres who forces Benito Morreira to come up with a truly spectacular save that prevents the scoreboard from opening. Everal Trapp then uses this spot kick to find Orlando Jimenez who fails to power the header past Jesus Urbina. Orlando gets this change to make amends but fires this left foot from inside the box that displays power but not accuracy and we’re scoreless at the half. We’re at the 57th minute when Shamir Randy Pacheco launches this superb right foot off the set piece outside the 18 and this time the crossbar is not Jesus Urbina’s best friend as Verdes FC takes the 1-zip lead.

Norman Pipersburgh raises this spot kick into the danger zone as the Texmar team looks for the equalizer which is kept alive but neither Kareem Haylock nor Robert Muschamp can turn it into goal. Now you make the call…Ashly Torres heels to Louis Torres, Cristobal Gilharry comes in with a slide tackle that gets the ball but takes down Louis Torres in the process. The referee rules penalty while Gilharry flirts with the red card and gets away with it. Louis gets up off the mat and makes Verdes pay by finding the far corner. At the 65th minute, we have a 1-1 score and a tense ballgame. Three minutes later, Orlando Jimenez serves up this beautiful pass to Jarret Davis, both the defender and goalkeeper, Jesus Urbina react too late as Davis beats them to score into an empty goal for the 2-1 lead.

Tempers almost boil over when Najib Guerra and Louis Torres literally become entangled looking for possession of this loose ball but the rain and cooler heads calmed what could have been an ugly explosion. In the meantime, this trip by Humberto Requeña forces the referee to pull out the red card. It might have been a yellow at best but I guess calm was the priority. Nevertheless, Verdes holds on to the 2-1 Big W.

In other action around the league, the B.D.F. climbed to the top of the standings with a 1-nil victory over Belmopan Bandits. Police pounded Wagiya 6-2 and Paradise Freedom Fighters crushed San Ignacio United in a 4-1 score. Thus the B.D.F. leads going into week 8 with 14 pts, Verdes is next with 13, Police now show 12 pts, Belmopan 10, Placencia remains with 10, Wagiya 8, Paradise Freedom Fighters 6, FC and San Ignacio are stalled at 3 pts apiece.  Week 8 finds the Bandits hosting Paradise Freedom Fighters 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 6th and FC Belize will be inside the People’s Stadium against Police United. On Sunday, Placencia Texmar travels to the Norman Broaster Stadium for a 3:30 p.m. date with San Ignacio United and at Dangriga, Wagiya will host Verdes FC; game time is 4 p.m.

Turning to the basketball scene, national elite champions, San Pedro Tiger Sharks ventured across the Mexican border yesterday for a friendly against a professional team, Cancun Pioneers. A team that features 4 national team players for Mexico who played in the World Cup of Basketball all in September. The local team lost by 46 points, 124 to 78 in a game set up by the Friends of Belize in District Federal de Mexico. In local basketball news, on Saturday, in the Central Division econdary Schools competition, St. Catherine downed Wesley College 14-6 and Gwen Liz handled maud Williams 22 to 14 and both winners now begin a 2 game series for the Belize District female title, which gets off on Wednesday night. On the male side, tonight finds SJC facing Gwen Liz and Sadie Vernon battles the Anglican Cathedral College with a trip to the finals at stake. The two-game series also begins Wednesday night.

Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
