Melonie Coye Versus Arthur Saldivar in Court

Arthur Saldivar

The case against attorney Arthur Saldivar, who represented the Coye family in a money laundering case against the Financial Intelligence Unit, continued today in the Supreme Court.  Saldivar is the respondent in a suit brought against him by former client Melonie Coye who alleges that he walked away with a significant sum of money following a court order to unfreeze monies in the family’s account.  She says that on June twelfth, she and Saldivar went to pick up one point six million dollars in unfrozen funds from the Central Bank. Coye claims they counted the money and then left. And that’s where it gets strange. Coye states that Saldivar was holding a briefcase with over nine hundred thousand dollars in it, and left the scene without giving it to her. She further says that she has made repeated attempts to get it back, but with no success. Coye has gone so far as to retain the services of attorney Eamon Courtenay in an attempt to get back their money.  This morning, Senior Counsel Hubetr Elrington appeared in court on behalf of Arthur Saldivar.

“The claimant that is Melonie Coye, Attorney Courtenay and Coye, applied to the court to set aside the judgment in default that they had obtained against Mister Saldivar. And the court agreed to set it aside and awarded us a cost of a thousand dollars because we had to attend and we had to do some preparations. Apparently they were so anxious to conclude this matter without going to trial that they miscounted the days; they should have given us a certain amount of days and they filed the judgment three days before it could lawfully be filed. So it was simply a mistake on their part, a counting mistake….a one two three mistake that they made.”

“So basically what does the judgment entail?”

“Well they had claimed that Miss Coye had given Mister Arthur Saldivar some money and that he had not returned it to her and she was asking that the court order him to return the money to her. Mister Arthur Saldivar had of course put in a defense to that and the matter was to go to case management, but he had not put in the defense as quickly as they thought he should have put it in. but Arthur Saldivar can count from one to twenty-eight without a problem. When they got to twenty-five, they rushed and put in the judgment and then they have to now ask the court to set aside their mistake. So it was just a simply mistake that they made and they accepted that.”
