6 contestants compete to be Miss Big and Beautiful

It’s that time a year for a female contest like no other. It’s the fourth annual Miss Big and Beautiful Contest, which will be held seven pm this Friday night at the Birds Isle. The contest raises funds for the Jump Street Posse Carnival Band and for kids in the Port Loyola Area. News Five spoke to some of the contestants today.

Cindy Rowland, Reigning Queen
“Being Miss Big and Beautiful was fun. I get to meet a lot of people, a lot of people recognize you and go to places, help people out. So it was interesting being Miss Big and Beautiful. And people might say why would you go up for a contest being big right? But it’s fun and you get to show off your talent.”

Marina Welcome, Organizer
“This pageant is a pageant to me that is better than one in the past. These girls have cooperation, they work together and bwai trust me they can hammer it. You will see a little action of the hammering in a few minutes. It’s a pageant that you don’t want to miss. Why? Because they are big, bold, fabulous and beautiful and trust me they can do their thing.”

“Everybody has to come out and see this. We have six wonderful contestants going up and they have their thing up this year. We have talent, we have swimsuit competition, they have the introduction and they’re doing different countries this year.”

Nichole McDonald, Miss Creole
“I expect to do some community service if I am the winner. I believe in helping others.”

SherryMae Valerio, Miss Garifuna
“Just to show the younger people that we di big one could always do what dehn could do too.”

Jennifer Wade, Miss China
“It’s fun and I want all the big girls out there know that they can come out and don’t be afraid of themselves or ashamed.”

Ruby Armstrong, Miss Africa
“I hear about miss Big and Beautiful and I like to hear about it and I just want to be a part of it. So I talked to the manager and told her I want to be a part of Miss Big and Beautiful.”

Nichole McDonald
“Well, I think it raise a high self esteem. No mek nobody put yoh down, especially men or little boys or anybody. If you have a high self esteem, we big, we beautiful—well, I am big and I am beautiful so I think we should have a high self esteem.”

SherryMae Valerio
“Well, for one always keep our head up high; big, small, young, old; always keep your head up high.”

Jennifer Wade
“They will look forward to lot of fun, excitement.”

Ruby Armstrong
“Sometimes big woman, they always say big woman can’t do nothing bit we are big and sexy and I hope we can do something fi mek other people like we—we big people know that we can do something for ourself.”

Marina Welcome
“This competition, the money goes towards Jump Street Posse Carnival Band. Jump Street Posse is not only a carnival band; we help the kids that need help. We have some that need help with school, sickness, perhaps even death and the costumes of course, for carnival.”

Also contesting are Veronica Green and Toni Anthony. Tickets can be bought at the Port Loyola Health Center or by calling the organizer at 627-1346.
