Not enough doctors at Cayo Hospital…

Story PictureThere is an outbreak of dengue fever, and most of the cases are reported in the Cayo District. And while that is news in itself, News Five found out today that there is another story developing at the San Ignacio Hospital. And it has to do with a shortage of medical personnel. This stems from changes made about a month and a half ago, when it was decided that of the six doctors on staff, only three would be designated to be on-call and that they had to personally attend to all patients including outpatients, which could range up to a hundred and twenty daily. Today a crisis emerged because in addition to a doctor who has been sick for about a week, another took ill. That left only one doctor on duty to attend to all patients up until seven this morning. Understandably overworked, and without any relief, he did not make it back to work until much later in the morning. Of the two Cuban doctors that were to fill in, only one showed up. As for the rest of this evening, there is still no word on who or how many will be on duty.
